INTRODUCTION
The plant WITHANIA SOMNIFERA DUNAL is
an erect shrub belonging to the family of Solanaceae.
It is commercially known as Ashwagandha or Asgandh.
Ashwagandha is also mentioned as an important drug
in ancient Ayurvedic literature. It is a medicinally
very important plant.
4.
MEDICINAL USE
It has hypnotic and sedative properties due to the
presence or an alkaloid called Somniferin. The
drug obtained from the roots is regarded as
tonic, alternative and aphrodisiac. It is used in
consumption, emaciation of children debility from
old age, rheumatism etc. it has narcotic and diuretic
properties. The root powder is applied locally on
ulcers and inflammations. Alkaloids extracted from
leaves are applied to tumors and tubercolous glands,
tubers have a bitter sharp acrid taste, tonic useful
in : "Vata & Kapha" ulcer psoriasis. The
fruit is diuretic. It is also useful in hiccup, female
disorders, rheumatism and dropsy.
