INTRODUCTION

ACORUS
CALAMUS L is an aromatic plant belonging to the
family Araceae. It is commonly known as " Sweet flag
" or " Sweet sedge ". The rhizome contains
a volatile oil with an acrid taste and a bitter substance.
It also contains sesquiterpenoidic compounds such as Acorin,
Acoretin, Tannin, Elemene, Calarene etc. its much branched
aromatic rhizomes are used medicinally as carminative, stimulant
to central nervous system and as tonic.

MEDICINAL
USE
|
Its
rhizome is much esteemed as an aromatic stimulant and mild
tonic. It has high value in intermittent fevers. The powdered
rhizome is used, by the people for the cure of colic dyspepsia,
gastric complaints, hysteria, cold and cough.
