INTRODUCTION
|
The
genus Rauvolfia was named in honor of a sixteenth century
traveler and botanist Leonard Rauwolf, Serpentina refers
to long tapering snake like roots, about 86 Rauvolfia species
are found in the tropical and sub-tropical; parts of the
world.
The
dried roots of RAUVOLFIA SERPENTINA BENTH EX. KURZ,
commonly known as Rauvolfia root,
Serpentine or Serpentina root, in Sanskrit as Sarp-gandha
and in Hindi as Chandra bhaga or Chhota chand is, in opinion
of KANSAL AGRO-TECH, is one of the most important
crude drugs that is used in modern medicine. In fact because
of its ancient history Rauvolfia is one of the most well
known plants required for medicine.
The
roots of the plant were used for centuries, by Ayurvedic
and Unani systems of medicine, in India for various types
of ailments. Ranging from disorders of the nervous system
such as maniacal behavior, insanity, schizophrenia, epilepsy
and insomnia, and also for intestinal disorders, childbirth
and opacity of the cornea and snake bite.

MEDICINAL
USE
|
The
roots have been used as hypnotic and sedative in neuro-psychiatric
disorders, in ate of anxiety, excitement, maniacal behavior
associated with psychosis, schizophrenia insanity, insomnia
and epilepsy. Powdered roots of rauvolfia serpentina
are also widely used for treatment of hypertension.
