INTRODUCTION

ASPARAGUS RACEMOSUS WILLD is a climbing shrub / creeper belonging to the family Liliaceae. It is a medicinally very important plant.

MEDICINAL USE

Several medicinal properties are attributed to the root. The dried root of the plant is used as drug.

The drug has ulcer healing resistance or cyto-protection. The roots are said to be tonic and diluretic and used as galactogogue. It has also been identified as one of the drugs to control the symptoms of AIDS. Satavarin a glycoside of Sarasapogenin with 2 rhamnose and 1 glucose residue has been isolated from its roots. A mixture of honey and fresh root juice is given as a demulcent in dyspepsia. The root is largely used in the preparation of medicated oils, prescribed for nervous and rheumatic complaints.
